Q&A
Okay, first of all, what's with this "Chapman's Friend"?
Fair enough. The first time I bid on ebay I had to make up a user name, and all of the obvious ones connected to my "real name" were taken. Then I remembered that during the time that he was out of politics in the 60's, Richard Nixon would travel on business and register in hotels as "Robert Chapman". But that name was taken as well. That left me with a reference that I remembered from a Hunter Thompson article, that in 1972 Nixon's campaign supposedly had one of the reporters assigned to the McGovern campaign on their payroll to provide inside information. The spy's code name within the Nixon White House?
"Chapman's friend."
To quote Paul Harvey, "now you know the rest of the story."
12/31: It's come to my attention that "chapmansfriend" could be misconstrued to be some sort of reference to Mark David Chapman. Needless to say, not intended...
Fine, but I still don't get what you're doing with a website in the first place. Why put something together that is only going to be of even the mildest interest to a handful of people-- if that many?
And that's different from the XFL in what way?
Smartass.
Sorry. Sure, I'll admit this is an extreme vanity. But if you think that the internet is free of vanity projects, you haven't been surfing it lately. You can, if you want to, read a journal of a couple's vacation trip where they describe in detail exactly what they ate each day, and where. (Their first night, they ate at an Olive Garden outside Columbus, Ohio. Very tasty according to their account.) So unless all the rest of the trivial websites are eliminated with extreme prejudice, why shouldn't I throw my hat into the ring?
Besides just doing it to try to stay as web-savvy as I can, it's also the latest version of a new toy, and you know how much kids like to play with new toys.
If I end up looking at this site, what can I expect to find?
Well, like any pointless site, I'll fill it with pointless details about my interests and opinions. What records am I listening to right now? What do I think about the TV season? Things like that. Plus I'm sure that there will be plenty of gratuitous references to Aimee Mann and Ashleigh Banfield. Sometimes Tina Fey, just for a change of pace.
Anyway, I think this will be a fun exercise even if nobody else ever checks it out. Which is something you could never say about the XFL.
